Project Scope

Comprising approximately 118km of track, running from Reading and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east, it includes 21 km of twin bore tunnel passing directly under central London. It is connected to 41 stations including 10 new ones and is designed to carry up to 280 million passengers annually.

The construction of Crossrail has been described as like carrying out open heart surgery on London, while the patient was awake. To minimise disruption at street level much of the underground construction for stations, walkways and travellators, cross passages, ventilation shafts and entrances was carried out using mining and sprayed concrete lining (SCL) techniques.

To undertake this safely, the complicated water bearing strata underneath London, comprising the water bearing, and often with high sub artesian pressures, stratified silty sands, silts and clays of the Lambeth Group, has to be fully dewatered and any ground water pressure reduced to zero.

Using methods pioneered by WJ on earlier tunnelling projects in London, we contributed invaluable groundwater control to all the construction joint ventures, along the length of the underground section.
