Doha Metro Red Line: Delivering Complex Infrastructure Below Ground

The Doha Metro was a key component of Qatar’s infrastructure expansion in preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and part of the broader Vision 2030 strategy — a national framework to guide long-term development across sectors including transport, urban planning, and sustainability.

The Red Line: A Strategic Transit Corridor

Known as the Coast Line, the Red Line spans 40 kilometres from Hamad International Airport to Al Wakra in the north, passing through Msheireb – the central interchange station connecting with the Green and Gold Lines. This route plays a critical role in improving urban mobility and reducing congestion in Doha.

Project Delivery and Consortium Leadership

The Red Line was constructed by a consortium led by Impregilo (now part of the Webuild Group), alongside SK Engineering & Construction (South Korea), Galfar Al Misnad Engineering & Contracting (Qatar). WJ was responsible for designing and installing dewatering systems for two of the deepest underground stations: West Bay and DECC (Doha Exhibition and Conference Centre).

Managing Groundwater Risk with Adaptive Engineering

Due to limited site-specific pumping data and uncertainty around how the diaphragm walls would affect groundwater flow, the project required a flexible and risk-aware approach. The fractured limestone beneath the station sites posed a potential for high water ingress, which had to be managed without overdesigning the system.

WJ’s solution included

Sequenced well drilling, pump testing, and continuous monitoring

Coordination with suppliers to secure ~100 borehole pumps (11–22 kW)

System capacity to handle flows up to
500 l/sec per station

Efficient Execution and On-Time Delivery

By aligning technical design with real-time site conditions and maintaining close collaboration with the main contractor, WJ’s dewatering systems were installed and operated without causing delays. The project was completed within budget, contributing to the overall efficiency of the metro’s construction.
