Transforming UK Rail
WJ’s Role in a Landmark Project

High Speed 2 (HS2) is the UK’s most ambitious rail infrastructure project, set to revolutionize connectivity between London, the West Midlands, and eventually Northern England and Scotland. As the largest rail investment in UK history, HS2 is designed to cut journey times, boost capacity, and support sustainable transport across the country.

Nearly half of the 140-mile stretch between London Euston and Birmingham city centre will run through tunnels—highlighting the scale and complexity of the engineering involved.

WJ’s Expertise Across the HS2 Route

WJ has played a pivotal role in delivering groundwater control and environmental monitoring across multiple sections of the HS2 route, partnering with leading contractors and joint ventures:

  • London Euston
  • Installed pressure relief wells as part of enabling works for the new station
  • West London (Southern Section)
  • Delivered dewatering and depressurisation systems for portals, shafts, and cross passages.
  • Partnered with SCS JV (Skanska, Costain & Strabag).
  • Chiltern Hills
Drilled and operated wells up to 90m deep to dewater ventilation shafts.
  • Worked with Align JV (Bouygues, Sir Robert McAlpine & VolkerFitzpatrick)
  • Central Section (Wendover to Long Itchington Wood)
  • Provided environmental and hydrographic monitoring services
  • Supported EKFB JV (Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial & Bam)
  • Northern Section
Installed over 15 linear km of dewatering systems, primarily in Mercia Mudstone
  • Enabled dewatering for portals, shafts, and the world’s longest box bridge slide
  • Partnered with BBV JV (Balfour Beatty & Vinci)
    Birmingham Curzon Street Station
  • Designed and installed a perimeter deepwell dewatering system for the station, which is constructed up to 10m below street level
  • Engineering Excellence in Action
  • From deep shaft dewatering to precision environmental monitoring, WJ’s contributions to HS2 showcase its leadership in complex groundwater management for major infrastructure projects. Each section of the route has presented unique challenges—and WJ has consistently delivered innovative, cost-effective solutions
