Project Scope

Łódź Multimodal Transport Hub – Engineering Excellence Below Ground.

In 2014, Łódź, Poland’s third-largest city and a key geographic centre, received approval to build a state-of-the-art multimodal transport hub. Designed to integrate regional, long-distance, and conventional rail with new north–south and east–west high-speed connections, the project is a cornerstone of the city’s revitalization following decades of industrial decline.

Beyond the station itself, the development includes a network of feeder tunnels, enhancing connectivity across Poland and into Europe.

Dewatering Challenges & WJ’s Role

Historically a textile powerhouse, Łódź relied on clean river water and later deep aquifers for industrial processes. The new station required excavation up to 30 meters deep, necessitating a local groundwater drawdown of 12 meters to:

  • Enable dry excavation and slab construction.
  • Prevent structural flotation due to groundwater pressure

Following a competitive tender, WJ was awarded the contract to design, install, and operate the dewatering system for the main station and the first tunnel toward Warsaw.
