Project Scope

After successfully dewatering the casting basins and portal cofferdams for the contractor Tarmac, for immersed tube tunnels at Conwy in Wales and Medway in Kent, WJ were chosen to undertake the dewatering for the River Lee crossing in Cork, Ireland, WJ’s first major project outside the UK, the project set new challenges for dealing with the logistics of a remote site and the variable permeability of the fluvio glacial gravels of the estuary.

The project comprised five precast reinforced concrete units, each:

122m long

24.5m wide

8.5m high

Weighing

27,000 tonnes

These were built in a casting basin on the Mahon side of the river, which itself required the excavation of 1 million tonnes of material and was dewatered by an array of deepwells.

The benefits to Cork, and the wider area have been considerable, not least a reduction in the flow of heavy vehicles passing through the city centre and a saving of up to 30 minutes in travel times.

WJ also benefitted from the success of our first international project and it marked a pivotal moment in our growth journey. The experience of effective planning and execution, collaboration with local partners, and diversification to mitigate the ups and downs of the UK construction cycle, WJ was motivated to seek further international opportunities.
