Red Sea Global (RSG) is a pioneering developer based in Saudi Arabia, spearheading one of the world’s most ambitious regenerative tourism and sustainable development initiatives. Entirely owned by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) and chaired by HRH Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, RSG is a cornerstone of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the Kingdom’s economy and reduce its reliance on oil revenues.
Shura Island, RSG’s flagship development located on Saudi Arabia’s west coast, is uniquely shaped like a dolphin. At its heart lies the Coral Bloom Hotel, designed by Foster & Partners, positioning the island as a future icon of luxury tourism.
To support the hotel, villas, and restaurants, a central service tunnel was constructed along the spine of the island, flanked by the sea on both sides. This tunnel spans nearly 1 km in length, 60 m in width, and reaches depths of up to 12 m. With the sea and quay wall just 10 m from the excavation site, WJ was engaged to deliver a robust and reliable dewatering solution.
This marked WJ’s first major project in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Our involvement began at the early pre-contractor tender stage, collaborating with marine and geotechnical contractor Ammico.
We supported the development of the dewatering concept design, conducted pumping tests in late 2022, and followed up with advanced 3D computer modelling.
A deepwell dewatering system was selected, complemented by French drain trenches to accelerate drawdown and intercept fissure flows in the deepest excavation zones. At peak operation, the system delivered a pumping capacity of 2,000 litres per second, supported by over 4 km of HDPE discharge lines. Due to rapid groundwater recovery rates, multiple standby and backup systems were installed to ensure continuous and resilient performance.
Environmental protection was a key priority. To safeguard the pristine waters and coral reefs surrounding Shura Island, the dewatering system was meticulously designed to discharge only crystal-clear water back into the sea. Water quality was monitored daily using handheld meters and laboratory testing.
The project was completed successfully, demonstrating WJ’s hallmark reliability, technical excellence, and commitment to environmental stewardship.
